Heartworm prevention doesn’t stop at heartworms. Many brands offer preventative measures against roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. These parasites can be picked up while your pet is playing in the yard and once contracted can cause symptoms like bloody diarrhea. Left untreated, parasitic worms can lead to death.

How can my pet get heartworms?
Dogs and cats can contract heartworms after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Because you can’t tell if a mosquito is infected before it bites your pet, it’s important to keep your pet protected at all times using a heartworm preventive. It only takes one bite from a mosquito to infect your pet and infection has been reported in all 50 states.
My pet was on heartworm prevention but they’ve been off of it. What should I do?
Contact your veterinarian immediately to get a new prescription for your pet. You’ll need to wait seven months for the heartworms to mature, if your pet has contracted them, for testing. At that point, you’ll have a blood test performed on your pet to determine if they are heartworm positive.
When should I start giving my pet heartworm prevention?
Heartworm prevention shouldn’t be started later than when your pet hits eight weeks of age. Keep in mind, each heartworm prevention is different and you’ll need to double-check the label. But heartworm preventatives are dosed based on weight rather than age. As your rapidly growing kitten or puppy jumped across dosage requirements in a brief period of time, you’ll want to follow your veterinarians’ advice about proper administrating of the heartworm prevention medication.
What if I have a ferret?
Dogs and cats aren’t the only pets at risk of contracting heartworms. Ferrets are another pet commonly in need of prevention. There are topical, chewable, and oral liquid options. If you’re unsure what the best option for your ferret is, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
